How to Write a Short Biography of an Ancestor

A family tree full of names and dates is an achievement. A short biography turns one of those names back into a person, with a life, a place and a story that relatives will actually want to read.

Choose your subject

Start with an ancestor you have researched well, or one whose life particularly interests you. Someone with a few surprising details, such as a long journey, an unusual job or a family legend, makes a great first subject.

Gather your material

  • Every record you have found: certificates, census returns, wills, newspaper mentions
  • Photographs and documents
  • Family stories and memories from relatives
  • Background on the places and times they lived through

Build a timeline

Arrange everything in date order, from birth to death. A timeline shows the shape of a life at a glance and reveals gaps, such as a decade where you do not know where the person was.

Add the background

Local history brings a biography to life. What was the town like? What did their job involve day to day? What major events happened during their lifetime, and how might those events have affected them?

Tip: Be honest about what you know and what you are imagining. Phrases like "she would probably have" or "records suggest" keep your story accurate while still making it vivid.

Write it in sections

  1. Opening: a striking detail or moment that draws readers in.
  2. Early life: birth, family and childhood home.
  3. Adult life: work, marriage, children and moves.
  4. Later years: how they lived and how they died.
  5. Legacy: what they passed on, whether descendants, skills, stories or values.

Aim for one or two pages. Short pieces are easier to finish and more likely to be read.

Cite your sources

Add a short list of sources at the end. It lets readers check your facts and helps future researchers continue your work. Our post on source citations shows you how.

Share it

Print copies for relatives, read it aloud at a family gathering or include it in a photo book. Your biography may inspire others to share memories and documents you have never seen. For more ideas, read creative ways to share your family story.
